Eating Out on a Diet

Just because you are on a diet does not mean you should be excluded from a night out with friends and family. Although restaurants are notorious for ruining a diet, it is possible to enjoy a delicious meal without thwarting your weight-loss goals. The key is to simply make smart choices, and think about what you are eating.

Deciding what to order when on a diet can be tricky. Restaurants generally provide little information to help you make an informed eating decision. Even when nutritional values are placed on the menu, these numbers are frequently inaccurate. However, there are a few key words you can look for to help select a healthy meal. Anything that has been “fried” or “battered” is definitely a diet destroyer. Instead, look for menu items that are broiled, grilled, steamed, or roasted. As for sauces, eating foods associated with cream and oil will add major amounts of fat to your meal. Choose tomato or broth-based options to keep extra pounds away.

Many dieters assume the safest thing to eat at a restaurant is a salad. However, this is not always the case. Some salads include fried foods, and many are flooded with unhealthy, creamy dressing. If you are looking for a diet-friendly salad, avoid ones that contain extras like cheese or bacon. Pick one with a lean source of protein such as grilled chicken or fish, and always ask for a light dressing served on the side. That way, you can control how much you eat and avoid having your vegetables bathed in fat.

Portion size is one of the biggest diet-busters at a restaurant. When eating out, make sure you pay attention to how much is on your plate. Try eating only half your meal, and get the rest wrapped up for another day. If you don’t want a doggy bag, consider ordering from the appetizer menu or splitting an entrée with a friend. Be especially careful when ordering a pasta dish. These usually contain three or more servings, and white pasta means you won’t even get a decent amount of fiber out of your high-carb meal.

How you eat can greatly influence your diet. Generally, we eat out in a social setting with family and friends. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the interactive aspect of a meal and take the focus off your plate. Take time to put your fork down and converse with those around you. Also, be sure to take a long time chewing and savoring your food. Eating slowly can help you feel full before you wipe your plate clean. You can also help your body fill up with less by drinking plenty of water.

Eating should be fun, and sometimes that means leaving the comfort of your healthy pantry. Dieting should not exclude you from the restaurant scene.  A successful dieter knows how to make smart choices when eating out and never misses a social gathering because of their weight-loss plans.
